A car tyre is the rubber exterior of the wheel in a standard car. The typical car tyre is usually made of rubber or rubber compounds, and has a textured surface designed to provide grip on the road. The main function of the car tyre is to reduce friction and lift the wheel off the ground, making for a smoother run. Most car tyres today are the pneumatic or air-pressure type; plastic and solid ones are more common in toys and skateboards.
Types of car tyre
The difference in car tyres usually lies in the lug or tyre pattern, which indicates the kind of road the car tyre is made for. The most common types of car tyre are the following:
- Standard: Standard tyres have smooth, even treads designed for gripping paved roads. These are ideal for everyday use in good weather.
- Mud: Mud tyres have raised center treads that keep your car from sinking into mud and other soft surfaces. The treads sling mud away and keep the tyres turning while counteracting the pull of the surface.
- Off-road: Off-road tyres are for rough, uneven surfaces that could damage standard car tyres. Their treads are large and blocky and are often made of stronger materials, such as fiberglass.
- Snow: Snow tyres are made for wet, slippery surfaces. The asymmetrical pattern of the treads, keep snow from weighing down the tyres, and the longitudinal blocks offer improved braking and cornering.
Choosing a car tyre
